bulky sweaters pulled tight
socks in worn slippers
we pad down dew wet driveways
children in tow

each house dimly lit
dawn cracking over the trees
as the bus staggers to a stop
slack-jawed door listing toward the curb

children climb the tilting steps
white breath disappearing
shuffling to claim a seat
their own kingdoms for the ride

backpacks and bags
lunch boxes and hats
cell phones and pens
ear buds firmly in place

swinging shut against the cold
buses lurch into the road
swimming upstream
to spawn

hair out of place
we walk along silent paths
through half open doors
and sit inside alone
